New York Pest Expo 2022

Editor’s Note: This article will be updated as the event continues throughout the afternoon of Nov. 10.

The 2022 New York Pest Expo hosted by Bug Off Pest Control Center took place on Nov. 10 at the George Washington Bridge Doubletree Hotel in Fort Lee, NJ

This year’s expo included about 500 attendees and nearly three dozen exhibitors. The first New York Pest Expo in 2003 had one exhibitor (sole sponsor Whitmire Micro-Gen, since acquired), and 104 attendees.

Over the years, Bug Off Pest Control Center — through the New York Pest Expo and countless other one-of-a-kind themed educational events — has educated tens of thousands of pest management professionals.

Check out some of the highlights from the Pest Management Professional magazine team.

“Twenty years, wow! Twenty years for an annual pest control event is quite an accomplishment,” Event organizer and MC Andy Linares said during his opening expo remarks.

“Pat yourselves on your backs for constantly reinvesting in yourselves,” Linares added. “Thanks for being loyal to Bug Off and the New York Pest Expo for so many years. Together, we continue to grow in knowledge, potential and reality.”

Joe Barille, with Envu’s tech market development team, presented “It All Starts Here: Label Comprehension and Compliance.”

“The label is the law,” Barille reminded the hundreds of PMPs attending the expo. “Fully comprehending and complying with pest control product labels is the responsibility of each of us. Without a focus on product stewardship, we will lose our good public image and access to products and product uses that help us to protect public health.”

BASF’s Sylvia Kenmuir, BCE, MSC, presented “Shoo Fly!: Fly Management Solutions.” She discussed how flies can develop resistance to certain products, so ensure fly management programs incorporate product rotation. Most flies are very mobile, quickly lay a large number of eggs, have fast lifecycles, and require little food to survive.

“Thorough inspection and correct species identification are musts — but they’re also just the start of successful fly management programs,” Kenmuir said. “Fly management solutions comprise exclusion, sanitation, insect light traps, contact insecticides, residual insecticides, trapping and monitoring.”

Jeff McGovern, aka The Pest Coach, started in the pest control industry in 1973. The Palatka, Fla.-based technical consultant and frequent industry trainer presented “The Art of Exclusion.”

McGovern gave attendees the following tips:

  • Pest pressure is constant, everywhere.
  • Pest issues usually start with a hole.
  • Expandable foam, when used correctly, can be part of an exclusion solution.

“Assess and evaluate conducive conditions using all senses: sightings/signs, sounds and smells,” McGovern told the expo attendees.

McGovern’s 12 Key Factors Program:

  1. Remove access (entry points)
  2. Look underneath
  3. Clean
  4. Remove food sources
  5. look around
  6. Ensure sound sanitation is practiced
  7. Remove water sources
  8. look behind
  9. Ensure structures and equipment in it are properly maintained
  10. Eliminate potential harborages
  11. Look on top of
  12. Practice product rotation: first in, first out.

“If you’re proactive, you block out pests before they infest clients’ homes and businesses, and threaten public health, food stores and properties,” McGovern said.
