Technology is all around us and it continues to change the way we do things – even the way we mow the lawn.

A Durham lawn maintenance company uses technology that makes mowing the lawn as easy as using your phone.

Bill Shane now mows his grass with a robotic lawnmower. All he has to do is lift a finger and tap to set it in motion.

“There’s an app for that. I can set the days, hours and frequency of mowing, ”says Shane, TurfBot Mowing Services customer.

Shane has been using the robotic lawnmower service for a month. He says it saves him at least an hour a week and he doesn’t have to be home to get the job done.

“I sat outside on a Sunday morning, had coffee and watched it cut away – and waited for it to make a mistake, but it just keeps cutting, never complains, doesn’t ask for a raise,” Shane called.

Technology is changing the way chiropractors help adjust patients’ spines

Chris Lemcke, Technical Director of TurfBot Mowing Services, has been in the lawn care industry for nearly 30 years and founded the full-service robotic lawnmower company last month.

“With the robots we have the upfront costs, but after that there is really no work and that is the key and why it is so fascinating to put the robot on the lawn, come back every couple of weeks to cut the lawn and that’s it”, says Lemcke.

Lemcke says that it is not only a time enjoyment, but also environmentally friendly.

“There is no gas, it’s quiet. There isn’t much concern. When it hits something or you move it, there are sensors in it that turn off automatically. If you try to pick it up and remove it from the property, you need to have a code to make it work again, ”said Lemcke.

While these are distributed all over Europe, Lemcke saw a market for the robotic lawnmowers here in Durham. Lemcke has had six customers since it was founded.

“It’s like a Roomba in a house. It’s basically random. It has no real pattern, it just goes and cuts and it knows whether it has made 20 percent of the lawn, 30 percent of the lawn, ”said Lemcke.

Lemcke is currently in the test phase with the hope of expanding its business next summer and selling this concept by 2020.
