COMMUNITY TREES SEEDLING GIVEAWAYS BY LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES
Multiple municipalities will be partnering with Quinte Conservation and Lower Trent Conservation for this year’s Community Trees initiative. Residents of the eight participating municipalities will have the opportunity to pick up a variety of native tree and shrub seedlings at the designated giveaway locations on April 30th or May 7th.
“The benefits of planting native trees on your property are endless! They help to clean air and lock up carbon, slow and filter runoff, replenish groundwater and reduce flooding, enhance habitat for wildlife, as well as improve your family’s general health, and so much more,” says Maya Navrot, Quinte Conservation Outreach and Stewardship Coordinator at Quinte Conservation.
Native plants play an important role in this region’s natural ecology, and the Community Trees initiative provides residents with a great opportunity to support that role by planting in urban and rural properties and helping to increase forest cover.
Navrot adds, “The Emerald Ash Borer has done a lot of damage to our Ash trees across the region, it’s more important than ever to replace that tree loss and with a diversity of native species”.
“We are so lucky to be partnering with Trees For Life and Quinte West to provide residents free native tree seedlings to plant and care for on their properties,” says Ewa Bednarczuk, Ecology & Stewardship Specialist at Lower Trent Conservation.
As quantities of seedlings are limited, each family will be permitted only a certain number of seedlings, decided by each municipality. Participants of this initiative are asked to bring a pail or bags to carry their seedlings home in and be prepared to plant them soon afterwards. The time of each event is dependent on how long supplies last.
